Apple

Apple's struggle with Ehrlichia ended this morning. She very peacefully and quietly crossed to the Rainbow Bridge, knowing she was very much loved by those who entered her life exactly six weeks ago – April 14. Despite all efforts to stimulate her bone marrow production of red and white cells, there was no improvement in her condition - only a drastic decline.

All of GALT’s family has been deeply touched by this little girl, and her life and story will not be forgotten. Please think of her as playing with her toys, tossing them in the air, and running free.

In Memory of Apple Tini
by Amy Sela*

May 26, 2005

I write with urgency, not because I fear I will forget. I will never forget. Just mere hours after watching Apple Tini peacefully close her eyes for eternity, relieved of her suffering, I still so vividly feel the pain of her last days “racing” through every part of my body and mind. Time will take that away, other dogs will cross my path needing attention and days will take the vivid picture, mute it, and it will lay dormant in my soul for all days.

After visiting with Apple Tini for three consecutive days in the hospital and watching her decline, I know in my heart the community of GALT made the most humane and correct decision to her fate. Her suffering was clearly visible, her will to live faded. Her body betrayed her, rejecting every medical possibility made available and her eyes dimmed. Apple Tini could not be healed. Her body succumbed in spite of the outpour of love, faith and prayers that surrounded her.

Her life is mostly unknown. She had to belong to someone at whelping. How could she get lost in the shuffling of racing greyhounds to such an extent? I am grateful for her foster mother whom entered her life at such a critical moment and provided the care and affection that Apple Tini had never known in the mere 2 1/2 years of her life.

I pray that over the Rainbow Bridge Apple Tini’s soul will heal and illuminate. Her life, or more correctly, the end of it, should be a wake-up call for all. I dream we find strength in our hearts to forgive the horrible destiny that came upon this sweet girl. I hope we will never stop walking this path to change what little we are able, for we have not accomplished anything in our lives if we do not try.

*Amy is a volunteer working in GALT’s medical arena and was present during all visitations while Apple was at the Animal Diagnostic Clinic from 5/23 to 5/26.
