ADOPTED
TO HER FOREVER HOME!
Bergy’s
foster family has decided to adopt her - she has become such a loving
part of their family, they cannot bear for her to leave! Her Ehrlichia
will continue to be monitored and treated as long as necessary.
Bergy, aka
HD Bergy, is a beautiful champagne fawn 4-year-old female born July 18,
2001. Bergy’s sire is System Carl and her dam is System Air Bergy. Bergy
was found as a stray in Amarillo,
TX, and was turned into the pound there. She is positive for Ehrlichia
at a very high titer, and also to Babesia. Bergy’s
racing career shows her starting January 18, 2003 at the Hollywood track
located in Hallandale, Florida and ending at the Flager track in Miami,
Florida on August 12, 2003. Her whereabouts since then, like so many of
GALT’s strays, are not known. With her Ehrlichia titer being as elevated
as it is, she certainly has been infected for a while. Bergy has started
her treatment, which will be lengthy, and is in the care of a very loving
foster home.
From
Bergy's foster home:
Bergy
is a very social girl. She runs like a streak of lightning outside,
and she has done wonders for our shy girl, Sweet T (Twilight). They
play together, run together, eat together, and sleep side by side in
separate crates. When she is tired she is curled up like a basketball
on a pad or conked out in a crate.
During
the day, Bergy is her own girl. Sweet T does not mingle in the living
room, so Bergy plays by herself. She discovered toys... oh my, has she
discovered toys. First she just carried them and piled them on her pad.
Now, she discovered how to squeak them. Her favorite toy is a parrot
that says, "Polly wants a cracker". At first, the human voice
just confused her, she would squeak it, a voice would come out, and
she would look like the RCA hound, trying to figure out where that voice
came from . . . no one? But now its, "Polly wants a cracker, Polly
wants a cracker, Polly wants a cracker..." just a continuous stream
until she falls asleep.

Despite
her Ehrlichia and Babesia, she still acts like an athlete and in addition
to running she also likes to "ski". She runs in the house,
jumps on the pad with her two front feet, then slides across the wooden
floor. She does this very regularly, so we know its purposeful behavior,
and she has it down to a science, sliding across the entire length now
of the living room, about 20 feet. She is very very smart...way smarter
than any other grey or sight hound that we have ever had. You really
have to stay on your toes to stay one step ahead of her.

Her "old"
hair continues to fall out and the new hair is coming in wonderfully.
It appears it will be quite short, almost a palomino color. She has
put on weight and is looking really good. A friend of mine, who visits
with regular frequency, came over last Saturday and said Bergy looks
"spectacular". She could still stand to gain some more weight,
and we are working on that. You can see some rib on the crest of the
backbone, but there is a slight pad to the rib cage, and the pelvis
is filling out like it should.

If we
can just get her healthy, and overcome her tickborne diseases, she will
be ready for adoption and her forever home. We know Bergy will become
a wonderful companion for the very fortunate family who decides to adopt
her.

Update:
10/1/05
Bergy
completed her first treatment of antibiotics and was retested for her
Ehrlichia; while her titers were not elevated any more, they were not
reduced as much as hoped for. Her platelet count is on the lower end also,
so her spay and dental will be delayed until later. She has just started
another six weeks of medication. You would never know there is a problem
to see Bergy play and run around - she is just full of herself, and provides
constant entertainment for her foster family.
